Today I decided to take a stand. You can too…

Today I decided to take a stand.  Health & Wellness is my PASSION.  I am often frustrated by the fact that so many people are more willing to spend their hard-earned cash on makeup or pizza or cocktails than on their own or their family’s health and well-being.  I truly don’t mean to insult anyone, but after watching this today, I can’t help but ask the question “WHERE ARE OUR PRIORITIES?”

This talk was recorded in 2010, it is now 5 years later and the statistics are WORSE than ever.  NJ’s obesity rate is on the rise- especially in children.  In NJ,  THE STATE-LEVEL ESTIMATED ANNUAL OBESITY ATTRIBUTABLE EXPENDITURES IS $4447 MILLION.  (That is the latest statistic I found.  It is from 2009.)

Overweight and obese individuals are at increased risk for many diseases and health chronic conditions, including the following:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Some cancers (pancreas, kidney, prostate, endometrial, breast, and colon)

Here is my not-so-subtle call to action:

Please let me help your family get your health back on track AND/OR join me to help others reclaim their health.  It is simple, not easy- but simple.  Let’s #endthetrend together!

Please leave a comment below so I can contact you on how to get started on the road to Health!

Healthy Breakfast Alternative (Cheap too!)

granola

Food dollars are hard to come by some weeks and I HATE to spend on things that I can make at home for less money and more health benefits.  Cereal is one of those things.  I do not purchase cereal with loads of added sugar or cute characters.  My family knows that if they say to me “Hey, we are out of cereal!”, then I will surely, grudgingly return with generic shredded wheat.  AND I will grumble about it.

Through Divine Intervention, my current workout love suggests Power Granola as a great breakfast.  The macro balance is quite different with this program and has me deviating from the standard egg whites and oats of my past programs.  So I began mixing up baggies of what would become my now famous Firefly Fitness Granola Cereal.  Famous because my students (I teach high school television production) literally LEER at my between class breakfast.  I can eat it on the go and am told that it smells delicious.  When high school kids covet your food, it is time to take notice!

FIREFLY FITNESS GRANOLA

1/3 c. Old Fashioned Oats

1 Tbsp Walnuts (or nuts of your choice- raw, unsalted)

1 Tbsp Raw Pumpkin Seeds

1 Tbsp Raisins or Dried Cranberries (unsweetened if possible)

1/2 scoop Protein Powder ( I use Vanilla Shakeology)

Healthy doses of Ground Cinnamon & Ginger

1/2 c. frozen blueberries

1/2 c. unsweetened cashew milk

1.  Mix  ingredients together and store in container.  (This recipe can easily be multiplied.  I make it in large batches and portion for the week.

2.  Mix still frozen blueberries with milk (and keep in separate container for transport if you are on the go).

3.  When ready to eat, combine and enjoy!

“Hello my name is Jennifer & I CRAVE Chocolate”

I have been following a different workout program that I LOVE.  I don’t love the nutrition side of it though and I have been deeply conflicted about it.  As a Healthy Lifestyle Coach, I PREACH “Follow the program as it was written.”  Problem is that the way this one was written feels WRONG for my brain.

I have a sugar addicted brain.  The real deal-as in cravings that will be relentless and zap my energy and make me moody and sad and defeated kind of addicted brain- so a diet made up of 50% carbohydrates is not a healthy choice for me.  So with much trepidation, I have decided to bag the carb-loading lifestyle after 3 weeks (and 4 lbs) and go back to my nutritional sweet spot (pun intended).  I do plan to continue with those killer workouts and share my progress as the challenge continues.

In the meantime, I have to deal with the carb brain and sometimes that means tricking it.  My solution is here:  Clean Eating Almond Butter Cups.  (Kid approved!)

homemade-peanut-butter-cups

1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 cup high quality cocoa powder
1/2 cup smooth almond butter
1/4 cup raw honey or maple syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Melt coconut oil.  Blend all ingredients together in a food processor or blender.  Pour into paper-lined muffin tin cups or silicon muffin cups and fill half-inch full.  Makes 20.   Chill for 30 minutes or freeze for 10 minutes.  When firm, remove.  Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator.  Mmm-mm!

2 little cups of goodness are 146 calories/14.6 grams fat/2.8 grams carbs/1.6 grams protein/ 1.4 grams fiber

If you would like to see what I’m cooking this week, I post my recipes on my Pinterest board here.https://www.pinterest.com/JenniferCornine/this-weeks-meal/.  I am following the 21 Day Fix Nutrition Guide and would love to share more with you about it.  Just message me or find me on Facebook!

Day 3 Body Beast

10f68a8a47224a6e74049e2e0cf716fbDay 3 of Body Beast is coming to a close and I am whimpering as I type this.  I haven’t been this sore in ages and I am fairly fit!  I had been doing 21 Day Fix Extreme, I LOVE Plyometrics, yet I am still crying the day after leg day.  So that means that I am doing something right.  Right?  As I whine and whimper, my husband reminds me that the first week is the hardest, that I am tearing down and rebuilding muscle, and it will get less painful.  Not pain-free mind you, less painful.

As for the nutrition side of things, I am freaked out about eating 1996 calories, 50% of them carbs.  I had no idea that it would be this hard to eat so many carbs after YEARS of carb deprivation.  But I committed and I will see it through or else I will just end up a fatter, marshmallow from eating so much in Build/ Bulk.  You cannot do the carb loading without the depletion that comes in phase 3.carb-loading

I am so very thankful for the Facebook Groups that I scroll all day for encouragement and for a trainer with such heart in Sagi.  I couldn’t do this without the group support.  As a Beachbody Coach, you would think that I wouldn’t be shocked about how much I rely on group support.  As a facilitator, you get comfortable allaying other people’s fears about starting something new that you have already been through.  It is all familiar and you guide others through with confidence.  This is a whole new depth for me and it makes me FEEL exactly what my challengers feel and how much trust they have to place in me to take the first step.  Just another way that this is a gift for me.

Please comment below your words of advice/encouragement if you have done Beast before, follow me if you want to see the good , the bad & the ugly of my first time around with Body Beast or message me if you think you would like to join me in this Challenge- I would love the company!

21 Day Fix Extreme Days 2 & 3 Reviewed

This is usually the point in the process where I blow it.  Not the workout part- I’m good with that, it is the nutrition plan.  I never held hard and fast to the plan.  “BUT YOU ARE A COACH!!!!”,  I hear the people scream.  Yes, I am a health coach and uniquely flawed like we all are.  My downfall is sticking to the plan AS IT IS WRITTEN.  The last time I did the plan as it was written, (drumroll please) I lost weight.  I removed 20 lbs with Focus T25.  I lost 8lbs with Ultimate Reset.  I lost 4 lbs with the 3 Day Refresh.  The programs work if you work them.

(Slogan borrowed from another great cause, applies here too!  😉  )it_works_if_you_work_it_so_work_it_cause_youre_wo

I resolved this time to do it right.  I gained back some weight through my parasite cleanse process, a story for another blog post.  I need to get it off of my body because I feel sluggish and uncomfortable and it is time.  So I decided to jump in with a Mega-Challenge Group and tackled 21 Day Fix Extreme.  I am the participant, not the coach, so I am doing what I am told to do (just like I tell others in my groups to do) and working the plan as it is written.  And it works!e8e61aab7ed578118db05414a57c6987

I am proud to announce that I have lost 4 lbs so far in this Challenge as of the start of Day 4 weigh in.  And I ate pasta last night.  Because it was on the plan!  Marinara-Sauce-1024x768People far smarter than I am have designed this to work.  Not just for some people, for everyone if you work the plan as it is written.

As for the workouts-  I freaking love them.  Weights make me feel so Bad Ass and I have success in those 30 minutes at 5:30 in the morning.  I drink my Shakeology as I am told to do and I show up at work feeling like a Rockstar.  I can’t wait to see what Day 7 feels like.  I’ll keep you posted (and hey- if you want to jump in and do this with me, comment, like, shoot me a message and we’ll get you set up.  What do you have to lose? ).6d0ac4df53e88de1690e91be1fe071dd
